Day 66, Northeastern Aegean Island of Samos, Greece

We continue on our Meditteranean cruise.......a quick stop over in Samos, the green pearl of the Aegean, a favourite holiday destination for people wishing to enjoy the authentic atmosphere of an unspoilt Greek island.

The island offers a mild climate all year round, with warm winters and not very hot summers.
Splash vegetation, magnificent beaches with crystal clear waters, interesting antiquities, historical monasteries......
Being the home island of Pythagoras and Aristarchos, and many other great people of Arts and Sciences, Samos accommodates the University of the Aegean many other scientific and cultural events.

Many civilizations have inhabited this small Aegean island, near Asia Minor, since the 3rd millennium B.C.
The remains of Pythagoreion, an ancient fortified port with Greek and Roman monuments and a spectacular tunnel-aqueduct, as well as the Heraion, temple of the Samian Hera, can still be seen here......and it is a UNESCO WHS.

Famous musicians and theatrical schemes from all over the world perform here every summer (July-Sept) at the Kalomiris Festival.....so who was " MANOLIS KALOMIRIS "?.
Born in Smyrna to a family whose origins are in Samos, h
e composed more than 220 works which cover a variety of musical idioms.
Amongst these are : five operas, three symphonies, symphonic poems, a piano concerto, a concertino for violon, song - cycles for voice and orchestra, and for voice and piano, works for the piano, chamber music, choral music as well as songs and piano pieces for children...

Amit wants to go for some painting lessons.......and do some yoga and shiatsu.......please put it on your things to do list, Amit....we have to leave this island now......
