Day 43, St. Thomas, U.S.Virgin Islands

There is a phone call for me? From??

Wow, it's Brenda (http://www.postcrossing.com/user/9teen87) who has heard about our trip around the world and has invited us to join her in Saint Thomas, an island in the Caribbean Sea, a county and constituent district of the United States Virgin Islands...........and its only 90km away from here....so Captain, what are we waiting for? Let's go.......

Brenda is taking us to Fort Christian, a Danish-built fort in Saint Thomas.

It was constructed by the Danish government in the 1600s who occupied the small Caribbean island. As the oldest standing structure in the U.S. Virgin Islands, this fort has served as a town center, a government building, and a jail. It currently holds the St. Thomas Museum. This museum holds artifacts and art of the Danish period.

It was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1977.

Ooops, Brenda told us that we have missed the Caribbean Carnival which occurs here in April where would have seen the moko jumbies.

Marti wants to know what a moko jumbi is....it is a stilts walker or dancer who wears colorful garb and carnival masks...

The origin of the term may come from "Moko" (a possible reference to an African god) and "jumbi", a West Indian term for a ghost or spirit that may have been derived from the Kongo language word zumbi. The Moko Jumbies are thought to originate from West African tradition brought to the Caribbean.

Thank you so much Brenda. It was really kind of you to invite us here. Wow, another invitation! Brenda has just invited us to Florida!!! You are a star and we will definitely take you up on that invitation when we arrive on American soil.....
For now we must return to the ship.....the Dominican Republic awaits...

No, no, Amit you cannot take those bananas with you...there is enough food on the ship........
